MICROSOFT’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT IN AFRICA.

Image
It has been a few decades since  Microsoft  came into Africa to encourage digital competencies, internet connectivity and innovation . I would say they have pretty much, kept to this mission. Africa is clearly on the verge of being completely transformed through the innovation in Technology, and with the fourth industrial revolution looming ever larger in the background, the significance of sustaining a chain reaction with a series of activities is the key. For over seven years, Microsoft has been running its 4Afrika Initiative on the continent by investing in start-ups, small-to-medium enterprises, partners, governments and youth while maintaining the focus to delivering affordable access to the internet, developing skilled workforces and investing in local technology solutions. Launched in 2013, the   75 million USD project is running across African countries including, Nigeria, Ghana, Namibia, South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. In 2019, Microsoft launched  Africa Developme

COVID-19 CASES: THE WORRY IN AFRICA.

Image
Many have been moved to wonder why Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are still relatively low in Africa. Of the 54 African countries, over 432 cases have been reported in 35 countries as of 20 th March 2020. We are still in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and many more cases are being anticipated within the coming weeks, however, there are factors that may have been responsible for the low number of reported cases in Africa including ineffective border screening and travel restrictions, local climate effects, a lack of screening or a lack of adequate reporting. The fear here is that many of us are not confident with the measures in place to fight the pandemic in most African countries in the event of a higher number of cases. The expectation is that African governments must act quickly; impose travel restrictions and beef up accessible COVID-19 Screening, Quarantine and Treatment Centres across cities. The public also has a huge part to play because precautionary measu

POLL CLOWNS

When he stepped out into the streets, they converged around him like Vultures swooping over their prey. The sun had sunk into the horizon an hour earlier; but the women kept vigil by the Senatorial Seat – seeking out-going Governor. If he could not perform in eight years, what exactly was he going to the National Assembly for? I wondered to myself. After hours under the sun, they stayed, and were now pouring accolades on this politician who cared less for their well being. The Governorship primaries scheduled during the day, and for which school children were told to stay home, had been cancelled. The overblown budget, weeks of planning and manpower went to waste because the leadership of the party was prevailed upon, for whatever selfish agenda, by a faceless cabal. The plight of the people, a section of which have elected to become unpaid praise singers, and who cued, to cast their votes, in a process that was anything but free and fair, meant nothing, like every other pol

The Campaign for Women's Right: Progress Made in parts of Africa

Image
Efforts to promote the rights of women the world over has been on for a very long time now. Many strategies have been employed but the theme; 'to promote gender equality and empower women' and the target; 'eliminate gender disparity at all levels' has remained. In Africa, the tom tom of the Africa drum has raised many from slumber in the same regard. Sexual harrasment, Rape, Violence against women, kidnapping and trafficking of women remain as the most intractable violations of women's rights today. In 2006, Chancellor Gordon Brown, and International Development Secretary Hilary Benn announced that the UK will quadruple aid for education to $15 billion (£8.5 billion) over the next ten years. That is to say, from 2006 to 2016. They had reasoned that Education is the simple most powerful tool in the fight against global poverty and this is nowhere more clear than in the education of girls. Findings had revealed that more than 100 million of the world's children

The Millennium Development Goals -MDGs: A Bold Perspective

Image
Looking at the MGDs the first question that must come to mind should be- is Africa on the road to achieve them? Many might tend to assume that Africa is indeed prepared to change the face of the continent by meeting the MDGs. This is not a firm disposition. In creating the true need for changing Africa, Africans must first of all allow the word “consistent” to mean something important to them. Frankly speaking, the change which Africa seeks is already engraved on her soil, but recognizing this change involves adopting a new attitude towards development. As long as change is the key word, the younger generation is in a better position to take advantage of all the resources that the modern world has brought. Moreover, the young people are the largest group of people in the world, yet have remained largely vulnerable; therefore, they should seize up the capacity to take responsibility for self by adopting a risk free lifestyle. This is the key to ensuring a generation free of HIV/A
