TEN THINGS NIGERIAN

Greeting Style A new way of greeting has suddenly found its way into the Nigeria English vocabulary. Aside from the everyday greetings, we now have 'well-done.' A term used in complementing someone for something done. Curiously, the term has assumed a new meaning and nowadays it has become a trend to see people on the street and tell them well-done. A total stranger may pass by your home and instead of saluting you in respect to the time of day, will confidently tell you 'well-done' without thinking twice about the true application of the word at all. 50 Year Old Youth Leader Unlike in other countries where youth leaders are themselves young people, this is hardly true of Nigeria where an amusing situation, but with a daring implication has developed. The older generation of politicians of recent era have changed the rules to fit their selfish agenda, and by so doing have pushed the younger crop of people further away from representative roles to install themselves w

The Millennium Development Goals -MDGs: A Bold Perspective

Image
Looking at the MGDs the first question that must come to mind should be- is Africa on the road to achieve them? Many might tend to assume that Africa is indeed prepared to change the face of the continent by meeting the MDGs. This is not a firm disposition. In creating the true need for changing Africa, Africans must first of all allow the word “consistent” to mean something important to them. Frankly speaking, the change which Africa seeks is already engraved on her soil, but recognizing this change involves adopting a new attitude towards development. As long as change is the key word, the younger generation is in a better position to take advantage of all the resources that the modern world has brought. Moreover, the young people are the largest group of people in the world, yet have remained largely vulnerable; therefore, they should seize up the capacity to take responsibility for self by adopting a risk free lifestyle. This is the key to ensuring a generation free of HIV/A

THE ROLE OF RELIGION IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN NIGERIA

Image
Upsurge of Boko Haram, a religious sect with origins from northern Nigeria, and the activities of members of the said sect recently threatened to force the country into war. The Boko Haram sect, is responsible for the destruction of lives and properties. Their activities, sporadic at the moment is as an act of terror, unpatriotic and therefore, unacceptable. More importantly, how should religion be employed to help in settling this sort of crisis? In an attempt to answer the question bothering on the role of religion and religious leaders, two key recommendations must be followed. •       Leaders of Islam in Nigeria must vehemently renounce the Boko Haram sect who claim that their activities; bombing and killing of helpless citizens of Nigeria, are in accordance with Islamic law. Note that Boko Haram leaders have declared Jihad (Holy War), urging its members all over Nigeria to take up weapons and start killing. That Islam is meant for killing. Kill all except the old and th

CULTURA VALUES OF THE BENUE PEOPLE?

Image
In today’s world, it does seem like we, the young people have decided to concentrate more on promoting the values of other cultures while our own cultural values are relocated to the background. Yet the implication that in neglecting to showcase our indigenous roots and the ideals on which our cultures stand on no one will do it for us is not lost. Take the western culture, for example, most contemporaries prefer the western mode of dressing, speech mannerisms and attitude. Maybe this is because the western culture holds more appeal or because we have simply lost interest in our cultures. But it is important to draw a limit to how we behave. We must understand that no matter how far we carry our desire to do things like the western world does things only our background will truely give us our true identity. However, we can choose to adopt the promising values of the western world and renounce our primitive values as well as beliefs. Only then can we be able to strike a perfect ba

I HAVE GROWN

Being just held after birth was not enough, so while tender still, I began to seat on my own. I wanted more, so I began to crawl, gently at first, then vigorously all about the house. Hey! Don't go there mama would cry sometimes! I would turn around and smile my cutest. I soon realized the strength of my legs, and i started to support my little frame with anything firm. Gradually I would let go and stand. The first time I achieved that, everyone clapped and cheered. Encouraged, i learnt to take little steps, and then the big ones after a fashion. My little steps grew and then I could run. By this time I could communicate with sounds, these would later develop into words and sentences. So you could say, that the moment I began to think for myself was the moment I realised that life was more. That it wasn't just about being alive or existing. I have grown from a child to a man now and I have got to think and fend for myself now. Things are not always easy, but things have always
