Where You Stand As a Young Person

When I was a child who knew nothing about my rights, duties and obligations, the black sheep of the society was a description that best suited me then. This was a handicap situation that fell behind as I grew up into a more reasonable young person; inspired by only the things that promised a secure future. Life became more interesting as I realized that I had something to live for. I had a vision; to achieve all the things that I set out to do in order to overcome challenges; an ambition to assume the responsibility unique to the contemporary world of today.

Look at the world as a fast moving traffic where a toad can not cross over except if it decides to learn how to fly. But of course, it might decide not to make the attempt at crossing at all and be branded a coward. Or it might decide to be a toad leaping in traffic and be crushed.

The world is a sophisticated environment where young people can not afford to deny or play dumb to the increasing opportunities that points at development. This is the knowledge age where people regardless of age must put themselves to good use. It is high time young people got stuck to the idea of a brand new system of things- a civilized society with a digital mind, where young people are in the center of things. This is where exposure must be allowed to play a very big part in many lives. Exposure is a process where one is constantly in touch with the very many different strokes that make up a society as well as how to deal with a situation/circumstance, people, responsibility and life.

The three Ws & one H (Why, When, What and How) are the different strokes that make up for being exposed.

WHY: Exposure allows one to be more competitive, experienced, knowledgeable, opportune and empowered to deal with the things happening within and outside one’s immediate community. With this, young people should be able to challenge themselves, keep open minds while dealing with criticisms, then put yourself on the track to being consistent in your interaction with life.

WHEN: Being exposed helps one to be more efficient, result oriented and rational. This is feasible when one has a good grasp on things around him/her. One way or another, you stand a better chance of exceeding beyond the expectation of others.

WHAT: One is likely to become an enigma, a role model or mentor, a pace setter or a teacher of some sort when he/she takes the idea of exposure very seriously. A truly exposed person should be able to distinguish between the fantastic and the real. So your peer group, colleagues or other tend to pay more attention when you talk.

HOW: Becoming exposed requires a time and patience, because it is a process. For as long as one is alive, learning and discovery new things is continuous. It never stops until the day when death will take you by the lapel and send to the here after. Education, training (workshops, seminars or other) research, asking questions, travel and readership are channels through which one can get exposure.

As a young person with the power to determine what he/she wants and be committed to it, what would you rather do? Put yourself in the position of the toad. Would you rather allow yourself to be left behind with excuses that will contribute nothing to your life as an enigma while the world moves forward? What are your plans for yourself? What are your plans for others? What is your plan for the entire world? Naturally, a toad will always remain a toad. But you are a youth; living in a society where individual freedom is not limited or confined. This automatically implies that we should know what we ought to do, which should be nothing short of achieving many goals? “Goals are the things you want to do or achieve within a specific period of time.” Every goal must be time bound, which brings the effective use of time into the circle. Setting goals is usually influenced by what inspires and motivates you as an individual. Every young person must be inspired by people who have made their mark in society; inspired by modern technology; inspired by the world itself.

Young people must bring their minds to bear on the fact that they are the largest and most important group of people in the world. Thus coming together under a collective umbrella will give them the needed advantage to fight against any form of injustice or challenges known to man. There is no pride in remaining idle. There is nothing to be gained by living carelessly therefore, what are the values, we, as young people have placed on our heads? Or better still, what are the principles we have set for ourselves?

Discipline, determination, consistency and focus are the lifelines of any and every serious individual. We must hold strictly to the view that young people can not be content with an average life style where poverty, bribery and corruption, diseases like HIV/AIDS and others and several other challenges still stare us in the face and get away with it. Young people should look to their future and not expect to be led by the hand like a man without eyesight or who dose not know his left from his right. No pun intended. The era which things were done for the young people is no more, therefore, we must learn to advance our welfare like real people. Life is not how fast you live it, but how well do live.

Young people are the wise of the society and can afford to make the journey through the impossible situations if they put their minds to it. It dose not require a diviner’s judgment to see this fact, as far as a collective development in Africa and beyond is concerned. The young person has the mantle. It is therefore not a crime to claim what is rightfully belongs to them, or aspire to achieve dreams that may seem extraordinary to others, nor is it a crime to put a foot in an oversized dream or vision. In truth, there is no oversized dream or vision. Nothing will remain impossible for ever.
