A TALE OF FEAR IN THE BENUE VALLEY

For a long time now, the Benue Valley has been in the news. Reports of killings have continued. Whole communities have been burnt down; in their place, charred remains of what was. Strange men have simply invaded communities without the fear of reprisal and the helm has decided to wear the regalia of indifference, even as tears and blood sip into the sands. Machetes have left deep slash marks, and bullets, holes, on lifeless bodies. The gory details of the role of killer Herdsmen, the new Terrorists on the block, and for some reason, the Military, are still running in the National Dailies. And we are left with one question: How did we get here? The Nigerian Government cannot continue to drag her feet in issues of national security. It really does seem like these groups are not doing enough in showcase their unique cultural heritage.  As it is, not very many people living outside this geographical region know a lot about the Benue people or their culture. The simple explanation for this is that we have not done enough in the way of showcasing what makes us different. THE NEED TO KNOW

I have grown to see education more as being aware, not just as a resource for classroom knowledge. This is appealing because the outlook allows me to broaden my world view and to relate same to all aspects of human endeavor, for example the economy which i see as the reflection of the socio-cultural well being of a people and through which development is measured and appraised. I would summit that, it is important for young people to understand the role of awareness in issues of good governance, the politics of leadership, the law of averages and growth, human dignity and the rule of law in a given society. Clearly, the problem for young people is hinged on what i call the scale of information (knowledge, and from which civic participation and leadership, political will and the need to act in a certain impact-oriented way can be noted, and acted upon. Simply put, without adequate information, our response and performance will fall beyond expectation in matters that affect us
